Nýr
Heida (New Hedeby) is a Not For Profit organization which focuses on
Viking Age Living History. While our group is based in the state of Missouri
(we have members in Columbia, Rolla, Kansas City and St Louis) we also have a few
members as far away as Iowa and Nebraska. We are an official group (or
Lethang) of
the UK group
The Vikings and
founding members of The
Vikings-NA. The
Vikings was founded in 1971 and is the oldest and largest Viking Age
re-enactment society in the UK, and probably the world. We are dedicated to presenting Viking Age history as accurately as
possible. In our efforts to do so we are actively involved in either research, living history, experimental archeology, rebated steel combat or a
combination of any of the above.
Members try to capture the lifestyle and
culture of the time and area - from warfare to housekeeping, from trade to
raiding, using authentic methods and techniques wherever possible. Our
skills and crafts include sewing, cooking, tablet weaving, embroidery,
leatherwork, woodworking, blacksmithing, casting, armouring, chain mail, as
well as the fighting displays of our warriors.
Members of Nýr Heida portray members of the Viking Age trade city of Hedeby.
While any portrayal is possible most of our members choose to portray household
retainers of a wealthy merchant
from the city, caravan guards, or members of the local militia.
